Session 1244, Minutes
May 12, 1980
Page 7
lesser one would do --a certain kind of roof is required, which unfortunately costs
a large amount of money.
FIFTY-YEAR•ANNIYERSARY PURCHASE OF BUILDING NOW USED AS CITY HALL' µ
Mayor Mooney noted that the building now- used as City Hall was purchased fifty
years ago, on May 15, 1930, in an exchange of property by the City fathers. The
building at that time was 27 years old. The Mayor said there was a small group at
that time who were opposed to purchase of the building. He said he had attempted
to locate someone who was involved in the purchase, but was unsuccessful and cculd
not get any further information on the transaction. The Mayor noted that the roof
of Citi' 'gp il. is the original one put on when the building was built in 1903. By
moving into this building, floor space was increased from 7200 square feet (in the
building formerly used) to 97,000 square feet.
In response to a question from Councilmember Sabol Mr. 011endorff said a report is
being put together concerning replacement of the City Hall roof, and it will be
available at the end of May, when Council receives the new budget.
:Ars. Thompson said it's extremely important to-conv-ince the public of the import-
ance of preserving City Hall in excellent condition:, because of the historical
significance of the building. They must understand the necessity for replacing
the roof. Mrs. Thompson suggested that there be tours of City Hall for adults and
children to try to get people interested in and aware of the building. Mayor
Mooney and Mrs. Metcalfe concurred.
PERSONNEL REPORT
The Personnel report for the week ending May 10, 1980, was received and ordered
filed.
POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORT
The Police Department report for the week of April 27, 1980, through May 3, 1980,
was received and ordered filed.
FIRE.DEPARTMENT REPORT
The Fire Department.report for the week of May 4, 1980, through May 10, 1980, was
received and ordered filed.
COMMENTS ON BHS SERVICE REQUI-REMENTS kSEAT• LILTS) FOR CHILDREN
Councilmember Lieberman brought up the subject of seat belt's or-some.type of re-
straining -device on -buses which transport childrilli, He.said_even-though it is now
federally mandated that both front and back seat -belts be provided in automobiles,
no progress seems to have been made toward.making that aame.provision mandatory on
buses which carry children. He felt too many children are.injured because of lack
of restraints in buses Mr. Lieberman felt that each time bids -are asked for in
- connection with furnishing bus transportation f -or children, one of the provisions
be that seat belts be provided. He said he realized that most bus companies do
not furnish seat belts, out if they are asked for, eventually companies will get
the idea that they should consider having them installed.
