Session 1235, Minutes Page 8
January 7, 1980
Delivery dates for all sweepers are dependent on the availability of an Internation-
al Harvester chassis from the factory, currently on strike. Delivery quotations
range from 120 to 180 days. The low bidder, Jerago Industries, submitted also an
alternate bid providing a Caterpillar drive engine, including a California emission
package. The net cost increase is $1,150, however, delivery time is reduced to 30
to 45 days.
The administrative forces recommend acceptance of the alternate bid of $61,139
($59,989 plus $1,150) from Jerago Industries.
Mr. Ellman said this type of vacuum street sweeper, because of less complicated
machanism, should not experience the same amount of down time as the leaf sweeper
presently owned by the City. This sweeper can also be operated by one person, un-
like the leaf sweeper, which requires three people.
In answer to a question from Councilman Glickert, 11r. Al Dieckgraefe, Director of
Public Works, said University City will not be sharing this vehicle with Webster
Groves, but that the price is about $1000 lower than normal, based on each city pur-
chasing one at the same time. Mr. Dieckgraefe said it would also then be possible
to compare performance of the machine with Webster Groves, which should provide val-
uable data. IIe also said it is possible to operate this machine at temperatures be-
low freezing. This machine would replace one which is 13 or 14 years old, double
the normal life expectancy. Mr. Dieckgraefe said the Caterpillar drive engine is
a diesel engine and supposed to be one of the best in the industry.
Councilman Adams moved approval. Councilman Glickert seconded the motion, which
carried unanimously.
CONSENT CALENDAR
CONSIDERATION OF BIDS FOR GANG TIOETER
Bids were solicited from six suppliers for furnishing a nine gang mower cutting unit
for use by Ruth Park Golf Course. Included in the bid was a trade-in allowance for
one set of nine 40"fairway cutting units. The following responses were received:
Unit Price
Less trade-in
Total
Beckman Turf
$6,737.00
$1,577.75
$5,139.25
Outdoor Equipment Co.
$8,502.00
$2,622.00
$5,880.00
The administrative forces recommend acceptance of the bid of $5,139.25 from Beckman
Turf.
Councilman Metcalfe moved approval of the Consent Calendar. Councilman Sabol sec-
onded the motion, which carried unanimously.
PERSONNEL REPORT
The Personnel report for the week ending January 5, 1980, was received and ordered
filed.
