Task Force for seniors and youth
Meeting Notes
December 2, 2010
Review Minutes (October 20, 2010) and Agenda
Self Introductions
Members present introduced themselves.
Up-Dates:
Michael – It is possible that subcommittees will be created within the group to create an asset
inventory. One subcommittee will be dedicated to seniors, the other dedicated to youth. The
purpose would be to create a list and/or inventory of assets for each group. Another possible
addition is to send out a survey of youth and elderly populations. The intent is to create a list of
needs and use the list to begin new programs or get information to residents about existing
programs. Work has already begun with students from UMSL and Washington University.
Meeting dates and times
A calendar with upcoming meetings scheduled was provided to members.
Work on senior resources by Carolyn Amacher
Ms. Amacher gave a summary of her research about resources for seniors.
Existing resources were examined. Services and opportunities tent to be located north of Olive
Boulevard. Some local senior centers include the Ochs Center and the Crown Center. There are
multiple spaces in University City where services could be provided. There are also church
based services. A helpful online resource is MEAAA (Mid-East Area Agency on Aging). There
are also many resources for residential and home health care.
Interviews were also conducted. Some of the issues mentioned included the need for improved
walkability and density, stores not being user-friendly or they are difficult to get to. Also, not
everyone knows what resources are available.
Michael – Similar research is being done by UMSL and Washington University students. It may
be helpful to combine the lists of resources and opportunities when they are completed.
Questions/Comments and discussion:
-How broad will the lists of opportunities and resources be? Will it simply be a list of
resources and opportunities? Or will the list include the service being provided at each
location? Will the list include the capacity of organizations mentioned?
-First, information will be gathered from the students.
-The information gathered may be used to fill in any gaps in existing lists of resources.
tm;
E
