-There have been issues with language barriers in our area. <br />-The school district provides ESL programs. Classes are offered at the Crown Center. <br />-Perhaps a necessary service would be providing a translator. <br />-This brings up the issue of capacity. Not all service providers are capable of specific <br />needs. This is important. <br />-The school district also provides ESL programs to college students who don’t speak <br />English. There is an issue in this area with seniors who don’t speak English. <br />-Another important issue is the expansion of resources, combining resources and facilities, <br />and co-use of facilities. <br />-Two schools are in the process of closing, Hawthorne and Delmar-Harvard, which may <br />present new opportunities for additional facilities available. <br />-The school buildings are already ready for learning. <br />UCYS – youth leadership group forming <br />Michael – A group was started by students at Brittany Woods School and at the High School. It <br />is the youth counterpart to the Task Force. It is a youth leadership group. The group will be <br />th <br />researching what youth need and want as well as what services youth can provide. It includes 8 <br />grade student through juniors in High School. <br />New Grant to study bike/walkability <br />Michael – A planning grant was awarded to study walkability and bikeability. It is a planning <br />grant for the City through Trailnet. The grant could enhance the work being done by the Task <br />Force. <br />U City map and adding information <br />Zach – Maps were provided showing information based on what was mentioned at the October <br />Task Force meeting. Items include ward boundaries, parks, schools, and other landmarks. Any <br />other items that group members think should be included in map, the information should be sent <br />to Zach. Others items mentioned included the Crown Center, McKnight Place, and Brentview <br />Place. Future maps could possibly include the number of youth per census tract; Washington <br />University-owned properties, and churches. Also mentioned – adult day cares. <br />Michael – It may be helpful to research multiple uses of buildings at various times, such as at <br />churches. Existing buildings are an asset.
