Session 1660, Minutes
February 26, 1996

Page 8

PERSONNEL REPORT

The Personnel report for the week ending February 17, 1996, was received and ordered filed.

CITIZEN COMMENTS

Mr. Stanley Harris, 640 Vassar, commended Ms. Jen Jensen and her group for surveying University Park
with regard to the proposed completion of the Pennsylvania bridge. He said when the bridge was open
and also the connecting street (Vassar) at Delmar, this subdivision had much higher costs for street
repairs because of the heavy traffic. A more important issue is safety, since it is much better for
everyone, especially children, when the street is closed at both ends. Also, if the bridge is completed and
opened again to traffic, there may be intense pressure to reopen the other end of the street at Delmar,
which would again result in much heavier traffic, speeding, and danger for residents.

Ms. Jen Jensen, 706 Pennsylvania, said she and John Huston, 7011 Tulane, wrote to Council last week
concerning the Pennsylvania bridge reopening. The letter contained a survey of the area east of Midland
between Dartmouth and Princeton, including Vassar and Pennsylvania. Of 48 responses, 36 wanted the
bridge reopened as a walkway but closed to vehicular traffic. After the letter was sent, Ms. Jensen
received 12 telephone calls, 10 of which wanted the bridge to remain closed. Although many objected
when the bridge was closed five years ago, they now realize how much quieter and safer the neighbor-
hood is. She said a public hearing allowing citizens to voice their opinions should have been held as soon
as the reconstruction plans were known; however, she was pleased that one is to be held the following
evening. She urged Council to follow the wishes, whatever they are, of a majority of the neighborhood.

COUNCILMEMBER COMMENTS

Mrs. Schuman congratulated Mr. Larry Meyer, a University City resident who lives in her neighborhood,
on his nomination to the Federal Reserve Board. It is a very great honor, and Mr. Meyer has received
national acclaim for his economic theories and forecasts.

There were no bills on the City Clerk's docket.

ADJOURNMENT

Mayor Adams adjourned the meeting at 8:30 p.m.

Dolores A.
