Session 1643, Minutes
May 22, 1995

Page 3

occupancy could be 18 as suggested in Mr. Goldman's memo. Mr. Cotton said he
would support construction of a new hcme at this site, but it must be in ~
pliance with existing structures in the neighborhood in terms of height and
mass. He also encouraged the owners, the contractors, and the city to work
together to find a cc~p~.

Mrs. Schuman noted the Council has consistently voted against substantial ad-
ditions to humes that make them tach larger than others in the neighborhood,
even though such decisions are often difficult to make.

Mr. A4ams said b~ could only approve such a large home in this neighborbx)od
if other hc~es were being substantially enlarged at tb~ same time. ~his

Mr. Schoomer said b~ liked to encourage new construction, but the proposed
house on its current lot is ~uch too large for the neighborhood and would
create a new standard he could not support. He moved denial. Mr. Adams
seconded the motion. All voted Aye except Mrs. Thompson, who voted Nay.

The Police Department report for the month of April, 1995, was received and
ordered filed.

The Personnel report for tb~ week ending May 20, 1995, was received and or-
dered filed.

CITIZEN

Ms. Catherine Hunn, 1569 N. Hanley, said there have been nine incidents of
crime at her h~e since 1988--break-ins, stolen car, damage to car and ho~ge
by vandals thrcwing rocks, shooting bullets, bbs, etc. She felt her area was
not getting adequate police protection, and she asked that something be done.
Mayor Majors Ms. H~n h~ had some very unfortunate experienoes and
asked that a police spok~n meet with Ms. Hunn and try to figure out what
can be done to protect her and her family.

Mrs. Vivian Jones, 7526 Lynn, said she did not %~Tderstand why she and her
bu-~h~_nd could not build a new hc~e at 7526 Lynn. She said her five children
and six grandchil~ had no other place to stay. Mayor Majerus said tb~
vote taken earlier was not against the Jones family personally; it was a vote
mainta'n%ing the same standards that all in University City ~ust meet. Mr.
Cotton said he supports tb~ Jones' efforts to build a new home, but will not
support a hume so big as to allow a much larger number of occupants than
tbmre are in c~her homes in that neighborhood--the height and mass of the
proposed hc~e is just too big for the other b~nes.

BTT,T.q FOR SRCOND AND THT~D RFADTNGS

BILL NO. 8225 - AM~gDING (/4APTER 34 MUNICIPAL CODE BY C~ANGING THE CLASSIFI-
