<br /> <br />The Commission’s vision is “For University City to have a fully engaged community – City <br />government, citizens, students, business owners, and patrons that integrate sustainability <br />into every decision made, every action taken.” <br /> <br />The Commission’s values are an interlocking group of three circles: Social, Economic and <br />Environment. <br /> <br />Ms. Sechrist provided a list of the Commission’s Sustainable Strategic Plan: <br /> <br /> Green Building Ecosystems/Habitat <br />Mr. Breakstone stated the Commission will be working on a Green Master Plan for <br />the City. <br /> <br /> Water/Stormwater <br />River des Peres in University City and also the effects of the river upstream is top on <br />the Commission’s work list. Creating a linear park along the river is one possibility <br />being considered. <br /> <br /> Air Quality/Transportation <br /> <br /> Waste/Resource Conservation <br />The Commission is looking at creating more recycling, especially in the Loop. They <br />also discussed the recycling of food waste. <br /> <br /> Land Use/Open Space/Parks <br />Mr. Breakstone spoke on enhancing and improving land use/open space and a <br />planning and zoning update/upgrade. He also briefly spoke on tree management <br />and a commercial district having the same standards as its neighborhood. <br /> <br /> Energy <br />Mr. Michels listed energy action items of the Commission: <br /> Energy reduction targets for City buildings <br /> <br /> Update codes <br /> <br /> PACE (Property Access Clean Energy) program <br /> <br /> Renewable energy opportunities <br /> <br /> Community energy system <br /> <br /> Improve transportation energy use <br /> <br /> Carbon use reporting and documentation <br /> <br /> <br />Since the last presentation to the Council in October of 2011 the Green Practices <br />Commission has: <br /> <br /> Researched a green residential building code and a green commercial building code <br /> <br /> Discussed a green building rating system <br /> <br /> Developed seven subcommittees <br /> <br /> Worked on plans for educational outreach and a marketing strategy <br /> <br />The Commission performed an energy audit of twelve to thirteen City facilities. With <br />Commission support and direction the City has taken some actions to save energy in the <br />City-owned lighting infrastructure. <br /> <br /> Ten percent of street poles and lamps have been decommissioned <br /> <br /> Found a fifty-percent savings in pole change from Ameren UE <br /> <br /> Upgraded street light efficiency <br /> <br /> Studied the benefits of acquiring the street light infrastructure. <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br /> <br />
