Session 710, Hinutes
August 20, 1962

Page 27

and if it is the sense of the Council that it would like to express soa~
concern over paragraph 3 and some definite opinion on paragraph 4, perhaps
a resolution should be drafted for this Councilts consideration and the
Council can have somethin§ to act on.

In response to an inquiry by Councilman Epstein, the City Hanager ex-
plained that a section of the highway will enter University City south
of Delmar, a few hundred feet in the vicinity of HcKnight Road - it will
cross HcKnight Road - and then proceed doom the middle of Canterbury Gar-
dens and will proceed north of Olive - more in Olivette - it will run
about a mile through University City. He said it will run east of LePere.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS AT INTER~ECTION OF OLIVE AND WESTGATE:
Upon inquiry by Mayor Kaufman whether any member of the public desires to
be heard on any matter not on the agenda, Hr. Charles Thompson, President
of the Tallman Company, located at 6435 Haple Avenue, asked to be recog-
nized, which request was granted. Mr. Thompson stated he was present
earlier when this matter was discussed, but the Council moved on to an-
other subject before he had an opportunity to express his views. Hr.
Thompson urged the Council to reconsider extension of the island - he
said he agrees with Councilman Tendlet and with Hrs. Clickerr on the
£1ashing lights, and is of the opinion that everything possible should
be done to protect children as well as adults at the crossing - it is a
dangerous crossing - but the merchants in the area cannot afford to be
injured, business-wise. Hr. Thompson contended that if the traffic pat-
tern is ohanged coming through the cut-off it will adversely affect the
merchants, and he pointed up some of the problems which would arise if
the island is extended.

Councilman Tandler explained that he believes Hr. Tho~psonts request
is reasonable and the Council has at this time requested only the neces-
sary paper work to be done in order that the Council may consider the
matter further.

Hr. Sidney Fo~man, President of the Farm and Home Equipment Company,
located at the intersection under discussion, Hestgate and Olive Street
Road, said he wants to go on record as being in favor of the flasher idea,
but he reals that proper thinking was not given to the extension of the
island preventing a through north and south flow of traffic. He requested
the Council to reconsider and eliminate the extension of the island until
such time as a proper study can be made and a proper solution received.

REQUEST T~HAKE HAFNER PLACE ONE-WAY STREET:
Upon inquiry by Nayor Kaufinan as to whether any member of the public de-
sires to be heard on any matter, Hr. Joe Friedman, 1262 Hafner Place,
asked to be recognized, which request was granted. Hr. Friedman dis-
cussed traffic conditions on Hafner Place and urged that Hafner Place be
made a one-way street, southbound.

Councilman Tandler suggested that the Traffic Division of the Police De-
partment should be asked to conduct a count to try to determine how
serious the over-all traffic problem is and perhaps the Traffic Comnission
should be notified of this request.

SPEEDING - ~ANNON AVENUE:
~ounci!m~_u ~pstein inquired whether the City Nanager has received informa-
tion on the matter of speeding on Gannon Avenue which was recently report-
