Session 1687, Minutes
February 10, 1997

these systems. Mr. Ollendorff said we had the generators on two other
vehicles. We are going to a new system for refilling air tanks, which will
have to purchased.

Mayor Adams queried Council's pleasure and the all-aye motion carried.

POLICE REPORT

The Police report for January 1997, was received and ordered filed.

CITIZEN CO~4ENTS

Mr. Tyrone Shockency, 1089 Colby, wanted to make some comments regarding the
lack of basketball courts at the new Recreation Facility. He stated that the
City had done an excellent job and was glad the City now had full time staff
there to operate it. He was concerned that the monies used in planning and
setting up the facility was focused towards soccer and tennis, maybe another
sport, as well. Mr. Shockency, wanted to confirm that a survey of residents
was indeed done to help with the design of the building.

The Mayor confirmed the Park Commission was fully involved in the study,
survey and design of the facility. The Council did not assist in the project.

Mr. Schockency mentioned that the basketball facility was only a half court
set up in a corner of the gym. He felt that it was a disgrace that the City
did not provide a full and proper basketball court. He felt that we should
direct more money to basketball so that kids, that did not play soccer or
tennis, would have something to do after school and after dark. Mr. Shockency
recommended that we put up a universal floor, where many types of sports could
be played or that the schools open up their gyms to the public.

Mayor Adams stated that the City had no control of the school system.

Mr. Schockency stated that he coached basketball for five years and he felt
that the City did not do the best job in diversifying sport options for the
city. He asked Council what kind of plans are in the work for basketball and
kid's programs.

Mayor Adams suggested that Mr. Shockency discuss these issues with the Park
Commission at their next meeting.

Mr. Wagner agreed with the Mayor and thanked Mr. Schockency for his good ideas
and encouraged him to attend the Park Commission's next meeting adding that
the Commission would be very interested in hearing his ideas.

Mr. Ollendorff stated that the City put basketball first in many of it's
plans, such as the Heman Park courts installed in 1991 and in the new
facility.

Mr. Shockency ended saying that a night program would also be beneficial for
kids.

Mrs. Thompson thanked Mr. Shockency for his comments and agreed that it was
hard to understand construction of any sports facility without basketball and
assured him that it was important to University City as the City Manager
stated.
