Session 1772
January 10, 2000

positive it will work, so he recommends the trial basis. If the Council is not interested in
doing this, the alternative might be to refer the matter back to the Traffic Commission,
rather than killing the matter entirely.

Mr. Schoomer said that it would probably take close to two months to consider the
legislation changing the parameters of the parking permit law. He suggests taking the City
Manager's and Traffic Commission's advice and attempt to implement this for 60 days,
which will cover the beginning of the spring semester. We'll see if it works and see the
problems that it may or may not generate and then be prepared at the end of that time
either to make it permanent or remove it to make a permit parking system.

3. The Council could
vote on it at the next meeting, either to approve, table or defeat. The Council
could also vote to remove it from the docket and refer it back to the Traffic
Commission.

Mr. Munkel said that he would like to see this expire in 60 days. Maybe it would
be more appropriate at the next meeting. The City Manager could be asked to
direct our law enforcement officers to be more stringent on all the areas. There
should be a serious consequence for offenders of these parking restrictions.

Mr. Ollendorff stated that the trial period can be as long or as short as Council
desires. On the other streets, Mr. Ollendorff explained that the police
enforcement has been very neighbor friendly. They do not patrol everyday and

11
