She stated that as Council may be aware this morning three individuals were
injured and two young children died in a fire in the City of Berkeley. Neighbors, family, friends and constituents, should be advised that if they
must use a space heater that it should be placed far away from flammable materials
such as curtains and bedding. Gas appliances should be inspected annually, and
each household or business should have one functioning carbon monoxide detector.
Ms. Stuhlman stated that it is a little known fact that carbon monoxide detectors have
an expiration date of between three to seven years. She stated that they would also
strongly discourage the use of extension cords for any of these devices. However if
no other options are available then these devices should be used with a surge
protector. She stated that the use of any type of candle should be avoided whenever
possible. But here again, extreme caution should be exercised when using candles,
and one should always ensure that they are extinguished prior to leaving the
premises or going to bed.
