CITIZEN PARTICIPATION (Total of 15 minutes allowed)
Loren Grossman, 7350 Drexel Drive
Mr. Grossman stated that in 1960 the first televised presidential debate was held between
John Kennedy and Richard Nixon and today they have become an expected part of our
election process. He stated that no incumbent, no matter how desperate they were to
retain office, has ever made the decision not to participate in a debate with their
contender. Mr. Grossman stated that he has lived in University City since 1983 and
cannot remember a contested City City Council election that did not include a voter’s
forum. In most cases this was conducted by the League of Women Voters, a highly
trusted civic organization known for its absolute impartiality. But this year the incumbent
City Councilpersons in Wards 1 and 2; Mr. Glickert and Mr. Kraft, have refused to
participate in such a forum. Considering the fact that Mr. Glickert extols the fact that this
is the most transparent City City Council ever; it should follow that these incumbents
would be proud of their accomplishments, their plans for the future, and therefore be
willing to state and defend them in a public forum.
Mr. Grossman stated that as a result of their refusal to participate the League has
decided not to conduct the forum and the voters of University City will not have the
opportunity to measure the qualifications of the candidates. He stated that since he does
not know why Mr. Kraft and Mr. Glickert are unwilling to participate in what has certainly
become a tradition in University City, he can only assume that their decision is based on
their own personal self-interest. Mr. Grossman stated that what he does know is that their
refusal to participate is not in the best interest of the voters and their constituents in the
stnd
1 and 2 Wards.
