ARTICLE 903. DANCE HALLS AND Df2~CING SCHOOLS, Section 903.1. Definitions. Section 903.2. License required. Section 903.3. Applications. Section 903.4. Definitions: Public dance halls, ballrooms or public dances as used in this article shall mean a place or room where the public generally is invited or permitted to engage in dancing for the payraent of a fee or other consideration, and is held out to the public as a place where dances will be civeu. A private dancing school or academy~ or dancing class, as used in this article, shall mean a place conducted as a school of instruction where courses in various fo~s of dentin5 are given upon the payr]ent of fees therefor, but where the public general- ly is not invited or per~ltted to enter and engage in dancing. Section 903.2. License required: It shall be unlawful to conduct any public dance hall or ballroom, or other place for holding any public dance or ball, or to convene, hold, teach or conduct any class or person or persons in dancing, or to give any instructions in dancing for hire or compensation of any kind in any ks!! or acaderay or other place within the city, without a license therefor. Section 903.3. Applications: Ail applications for a license to operate a public dance hall or conduct a public dance, or to conduct a dancing school, academy or dancing classes, shall be ~ade to the director of finance on such fort~s as he raay prescribe, giving such information as may be required. All such applica- tions shall be referred to the chief of police for investigation. He shall, witl~ the assistance of the chief of the fire department, investigate the hall or premises where it is proposed to conduct such public dance or public dance hall, having particular regard to its provisions for safeguarding the patrons and the public. The chief of police shall also investigate the character and fitness of the person, persons, partnership, corporation, club, associations organization or society, and a report of such investigation shall be ~ade to the director of finance. The appli- cation and report shall thereupon be referred to the council, which shall direct the issuance of such license or deny the same, as the public interest may require. Section 903.4. License fees, public dance halls or public dances: The following fees shall be paid upon the issuance of a license for a public dance hall or public dance: Per year ....................... $100.00 Per month ...................... 50.00 Per day ........................ 10.00 Section 903.5. License fees, dancing schools, academies, or dancing lessons: All persons, firms or corporations engaged in conducting a dancing school, dancing academy, or giving dancing lessons shall make application and returns for licenses in like manner, and be required to pay the same license tax, as is pro- vided in this chapter for merchants.
