17-403.4 Single family occupancy: No dwelling unit shall be occupied by more <br />than a single family and any salaried employees who regularly work on the <br />premises in domestic service occupations as that term is defined in the <br />Directory of Occupational Titles published by the U.S. Department of Labor. <br /> <br />SECTION 17-404.0 SPACE REQUIREMENTS <br /> <br />17-404.1 Area for sleeping purposes: Every room occupied for sleeping pur- <br />poses by one occupant shall contain at least 70 square feet (6.51m2) of floor <br />area; every room occupied for sleeping purposesby two occupants shall contain <br />at least 100 square feet (9.30 m2) of floor area; and every room occupied for <br />sleeping purposes by three occupants shall contain at least 150 square feet <br /> 2 <br />(13.95 m ) of floor area. <br /> <br />17-404.1.1 Water closet access: Every room occupied for sleeping purposes <br />shall have access to at least one water closet and lavatory without passing <br />through another room used as a bedroom. Every room occupied for sleeping <br />purposes shall have access to at least one water closet located on the same <br />floor as the bedroom, except that this requirement shall not apply to the only <br />bedroom on a floor. <br /> <br />17-404.1.2 Closets: Every room occupied for sleeping purposes shall have <br />access to a closet opening into the room, with a minimum floor area of six <br />square feet (.56 m2). Closet areas shall not be counted as part of the floor <br />areas of rooms. <br /> <br />17-404.2 Overcrowding: No dwelling unit shall be occupied by more occupants <br />than permitted by the minimum occupancy area requirements of Table 17-404.2 <br />and the sleeping space requirements of Section 17-404.1. <br /> <br />17-404.2.1 Combined Spaces: Combined living room/dining room spaces shall be <br />construed to meet the requirements of this Table 17-404.2 if the total area is <br />equal to that required for separate rooms and if the space is so located so <br />that it may function as a combination living room/dining room. <br /> <br />17-404.2.2 Sleeping space: Any room used for sleeping purposes in a dwelling <br />unit shall be classified as a bedroom and shall not be used to satisfy the <br />living room or dining room requirement of Table 17-404.2. <br /> <br /> Table 17-404.2 <br />MINIMUM OCCUPANCY AREA REQUIREMENTS <br /> <br />Minimum area in square feet (square meters) <br /> <br />Space <br />Living room <br />Dining room <br />Kitchen <br />Bedrooms <br /> <br />1-2 Occupants 3-5 Occupants 6 or more <br />No requirements 120 (11.16) 150 (13.95) <br />No requirements 80 (7.44) 100 (9.30) <br />50 (4.65) 50 (4.65) 60 (5.58) <br /> Must comRly,with Section 17-404.1 <br /> <br />17-404.3 Prohibited use: Any kitchen, non-habitable space <br />shall not be used for sleeping purposes. <br /> <br />or public space <br /> <br />17-404.4 Minimum ceiling heights: Habitable rooms shall have a clear ceiling <br />height over the minimum area required by this code of not less than 7 1/3 feet <br />(2235 mm), except that in attics or top half-stories the ceiling height shall <br />be not less than 7 feet (2134 mm) over not less than one-third of the minimum <br />area required by this code when used for sleeping, study or similar activity. <br />In calculating the floor area of such rooms, only those portions of the floor <br />area of the room having a clear ceiling height of 5 feet (1524 mm) or more <br />shall be included. <br /> <br />Exception: <br /> <br />Hallways, corridors, bathrooms, toilet rooms, kitchens and <br />habitable basements used as recreation rooms shall have a <br />ceiling height of not less that seven feet (2134 mm) to the <br />lowest projection from the ceiling. <br /> <br />21 <br /> <br /> <br />
