(CHAPTER 7 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS) <br /> (SECTION PM-702 MEANS OF EGRESS) <br />PM-702.9 Stairways, handrails and guards: Every exterior and interior ~ght of stairs <br />having more than four risers shall have a handndl on at least one side of the stairs, and <br />every open portion of a stair, landing, balcony, porch, deck, ramp or other walking <br />surface which is more than 30 inches (762mm) above the floor or grade below shall have <br />guards. Handrails shall not be less than 30 inches (762mm) more than 42 inches <br />(1067ram) high, measured vertically above the nosing of the tread or above the finished <br />floor of the landing or walking surface. Guards shall be not less than 30 inches (762mm) <br />high above the floor of the landing, balcony, porch, deck, ramp or other walking surface. <br /> <br />PM-702.12 Emergency escape: Every sleeping room located in a basement shall have <br />at least one openable window or exterior door approved for emergency egress or rescue; <br />or shall have access to not less than two approved independent exits. Where a window <br />is provided for emergency egress or rescue, the window shall have the bottom of the <br />clear opening not more than 44 inches (1118 ram) above the floor. The minimum net <br />clear opening shall be 5 square feet (0.47 m2). The minimum net clear opening height <br />dimension shall be 24 inches (610 ram). The minimum net clear opening width <br />dimension shall be 20 inches (508 ram). <br /> <br />Bars, grilles or screens placed over emergency escape windows shall be releasable or <br />removable from the inside without the use of a key, tool or force greater than that which <br />is required for normal operation of the window. <br /> <br />Exception: An outside window or an exterior door for emergency escape is not <br />required in buildings equipped throughout with an approved automatic fire <br />suppression system. <br /> <br />PM-702.13 Emergency lighting: All buildings, rooms or spaces required to have more <br />than one exit or exit access, shall be equipped with approved emergency means of egress <br />lighting to assure continued ~lumination for a duration of not less than 1 hour in case of <br />a power loss. All illuminated exit signs shall be connected to an approved emergency <br />power SOurce. <br /> Exceptions: One- and Two-family dwellings or multiple family dwellings not <br /> exceeding three stories in height and six dwelling units per floor. <br /> <br /> (SECTION PM-704.0 FIRE RESISTANCE RATINGS) <br />PM-704.3 Attached garages: Private garages located beneath a dwelling shall have <br />walls, partitions, floors and ceilings separating the garage space from the dwelling <br />constructed of not less than one (1) hour fire resistance rating. Private garages attached <br />to a dwelling shall be completely separated from the dwelling and its attic area by means <br />of one-half (1/2) inch gypsum board'or equivalent applied to the garage side and taped <br />at the joints. The door opening protective shall be minimum one and three-eighths (1- <br />3/8) inch solid core doors or approved equivalent. <br /> <br /> <br />
