The sills of all door openings between private garages and the adjacent <br /> interior space shall be raised not less than 4 inches above the garage floor. <br /> <br /> (SECTION R310 EMERGENCY ESCAPE AND RESCUE OPENINGS) <br /> R310.90 Alterations and additions. All unfinished areas and reconfigured space converted to <br /> sleeping rooms and unfinished basement spaces being converted to habitable space shall have <br /> emergency escape and rescue openings. <br /> Exception: <br /> Unfinished basement spaces being converted to habitable space other than sleeping rooms when <br /> 1) interconnected, hard wired with battery back-up smoke detectors, in addition to those required <br /> by applicable codes, are installed in each room/space of the basement, and 2) the stairway to the <br /> basement is protected by a minimum 5/8" type X drywall completely encasing the stairs. <br /> <br /> <br /> (SECTION R312 GUARDS) <br /> <br /> R312.1 Guards. Porches, balconies or raised floor surfaces located 6 feet or more above the <br /> floor or grade below shall have guards not less than 42 inches (1066 mm) in height. Open sides <br /> of stairs with a total rise of more than 30 inches (762 mm) above the floor or grade below shall <br /> have guards not less than 36 inches (914 mm) in height measured vertically from the nosing of <br /> the treads. <br /> Porches and decks which are enclosed with insect screening shall be provided with guards not <br /> less than 36 inches (914 mm) where the walking surface is located more than 30 inches (762 <br /> mm) but less than 6 feet above the floor or grade below. Porches and decks which are enclosed <br /> with insect screen shall be provided with guards not less than 42 inches (1066 mm) in height <br /> where the walking surface is located 6 feet or more above the floor or grade below. <br /> <br /> R312.90 Guard design. Guards shall not have an ornamental pattern that would provide a ladder <br /> effect. <br /> <br /> R312.91 Guards near egress paths. Where retaining walls with differences in grade level on <br /> either side of the wall in excess of 4 feet are located closer than 2 feet to a walk, path, parking lot <br /> or driveway on the high side, such retaining walls shall be provided with guards that are <br /> constructed in accordance with the guard requirements of the Residential Code of University <br /> City. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> 8 <br />
