Such installations existing before the date of passage of <br /> this ordinance shall not be required to be removed until such time as there is a change of <br /> occupants in the affected premises. Burglar bars, protective grilles or security screens, shall be <br /> maintained in a clean and good state of repair, firmly anchored to the building. Hardware cloth, <br /> chicken wire, woven wire, chain link or wire fencing materials shall not be used as a component <br /> of protective grilles or security screens for show windows, display windows or building <br /> entrances. <br /> <br /> (SECTION 306 HANDRAILS AND GUARDRAILS) <br /> <br /> 306.1 General. Every exterior and interior flight of stairs more than four risers shall have a <br /> handrail on at least one side of the stairs, and every open portion of a stair, landing, balcony, <br /> porch, deck, ramp or other walking surface which is more than 30 inches (762 mm) above the <br /> floor or grade below shall have guards. Handrails shall not be less than 30 inches (762 mm) nor <br /> more than 42 inches (1067 mm) high, measured vertically above the nosing of the tread or above <br /> the finished floor of the landing or walking surface. <br /> Exception: Guards shall not be required where exempted by the adopted Building Code of <br /> University City. <br /> 306.90 Retaining wall guards.
