Pershing Ave and Big Bend Blvd Intersection.

This item was discussed in last month’s meeting where the commissioners reviewed the four
suggestions presented by Mr. Thomas A. Poelker (resident at 7237 Princeton Ave.), in reference to the
traffic control at the intersection of Pershing Ave. and Big Bend Blvd.

Two of the suggestions were denied. Please find attached information on the law for intersections in
order to review the two outstanding suggestions as follows:

Suggestion #1 – Mark the pavement at the intersection of Big Bend/Pershing area with a “Do
Not Block Intersection”:
Pershing Ave. and Big Bend Blvd. is an intersection controlled by a stop sign designating the
right-of-way to Big Bend Blvd. The Municipal Code indicates that every driver of a vehicle
approaching a stop intersection, indicated by a stop sign, shall stop at the point nearest the
intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic in the intersecting
roadway before entering the intersection. After having stopped, the driver shall yield the right-of-
way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from another highway or which is
approaching so closely on the highway as to constitute an immediate hazard during the time
when such driver is moving across or within the intersection.
Suggestion #2 – Delineate the lanes turning left and right with their respective arrow, on
Pershing east bound, at Big Bend Blvd.:
Width of Pershing Ave = 42 ft
Minus Two Parking lanes = 9 x 2 = 18
Minus Two Traveling lanes = 12 x 2 = 24
Space remaining for an extra lane = 0

The street width does not allow delineation of an extra lane for eastbound Pershing Ave.

Public Works recommends that this request be tabled until William Pharmacy Entrance/Exit is
constructed after which Public Works will determine whether the improvements alleviated the issue.

Agenda Traffic Commission Meeting March 12, 2008 Page
1
