6801 Delmar Boulevard, University City, MO 63130
Phone: 314-862-6767, Fax: (314) 862-0694

CITY OF UNIVERSITY CITY
MINUTES OF THE TRAFFIC COMMISSION
MEETING ON November 10, 2004

Acting chairperson Susan Schafers called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. Those present
were:

Elizabeth Schiller St. Whitley, Police Department Representative
Melcine Henderson Mariela Tapia, Traffic Commission Secretary

The attendance sheet is attached indicating the residents present.

1. Traffic light located east of the intersection of Delmar and McKnight Road

Vernon Fischer and Miriam Wilhelm were present and requested moving the light located
east of the intersection of Delmar and McKnight Road to the intersection of Delmar and
Delcrest Drive.

Ms. Wilhelm states that at this time, the stop light is a hazard for cars. In her opinion it is
located too far to the west. When the light is red, there are cars stopped along Delmar and
the cars coming out of Delcrest, trying to make a left turn on Delmar can not get in. When
the light is green, there are cars on Delmar on both directions and is difficult to get onto
westbound Delmar. Since she knows Delmar is a County arterial, she is just looking for a
recommendation from the traffic commission.

Mr. Fischer also mentioned that it is extremely dangerous to make a left turn from Delcrest
to get on Delmar, because the cross traffic doesn’t stop. Especially during rush hours
there are 5 to 8 cars lined-up on Delcrest trying to make a left turn. In his opinion this is an
unusual position for a traffic signal (between “The House of India” restaurant and Delcrest
Plaza). He states that to move the signal just a few yards east, would not hurt any traffic at
all and the businesses would not be harmed in any way. Actually, it will make a safer
situation for motorists and pedestrians. Since he knows Delmar is a County arterial, he is
looking for advice to make the county do something about it.

Ms. Joan Botwinick resident at 511 West View Drive, mentioned that they have been
th
contacting Mr. Kurt Odenwald (councilman, 5 district-St. Louis City Council) to help with
traffic requests to the County.

Ms. Wilhelm mentioned that she believes the signal was located originally in that position
for the children going to McKnight School. But, there is no McKnight school anymore;
therefore, no reason for the crosswalk there.

V:\WP51\Mariela-Projects\Traffic Commission\minutes\2004\Minutes 11-10-04.doc
