Session 1818
August 6, 2001

CITIZEN COMMENTS:

Elsie Glickert, 6712 Etzel, stated that she had several concerns:

1)

It has come to her attention that there has been a house built with only one door.
This is a two family dwelling with once door. This is our housing code and it is
important that the City Council cease any more buildings like this in the future.
The address is 7245 Amherst. Anyone that she has spoken to about this has
said that there is no way this can be. She understands that this is the BOCA
code and it is ridiculous. One door dwellings went out with log cabins. Mr.
Schoomer replied that this issue will be referred to the Planning Commission for
study. Mr. Munkel stated that the BOCA code and the International code only
require by law to have one door and a window for exit purposes. He
understands that it can be a two story building with only one door. Ms. Glickert
clarified that if there are three stories, then you have to have two doors. She
went on to say that we do not have 1Io follow the national code. The City Council
has to address this right now.

2)

Ms. Glickert stated that her second question was concerning the age and hours
that children could be left unattended at the swimming pool. It was her
understanding that this issue was to be addressed at this meeting. The park
commission had voted to permit twelve year olds to enter the swimming pool
without their parents. She believes 'that this should be addressed this evening.
She believes that they should be allowed to come in. This is an under used
facility. Today there were thirty-five people there at 2:30 p.m. The day of the
Commission meeting, there were no, fewer than one hundred. There is no
reason to have this restriction. The Mayor said that it has not been referred to
them from the Park Commission yet and the Council cannot make this decision
without a recommendation from that body first. Ms. Glickert added that today the
early morning swimmers got to the pool and were told that, as of next week, it
won't open until 6:30 a.m. She feels this is ridiculous. This is business people
that swim at 6:00 a.m. and are out of there at 6:30 a.m. Why this restriction?
This is a million dollar investment and there are only ninety-one swim days in the
summer. These restrictions make absolutely no sense.

3)

Ms. Glickert would like to suggest extending the courtesy of the use of the
swimming pool to the residents of Olivette. They have the same type of
Council/City Manager government as we do. Let them buy swim passes next
year. Maybe this will solve the financial problems that the pool is under. She is
reading how other communities are .studying ways to share facilities. Olivette
can't possibly have a swimming pool. This could be an interesting approach.

12
