Please review for a study session on October 1. <br /> <br />The next evening in the four part boards and commissions training series will be <br />Wednesday, September 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Trainer in public speaking, motivation <br />and human interaction, Gerald Bruder will give his highly popular presentation on <br />Ethical Issues in a Changing World <br />. Mr. Bruder will discuss the difficulty in defining <br />ethics in a frustrating and chaotic environment and choices that members of Council, <br />Boards and Commissions may face when trying to achieve the missions imposed upon <br />th <br />them. The session will be held in Council Chambers on the 5 Floor of City Hall. The <br />session is open to the public. <br /> <br />September 24 <br />During the Council meeting Public Works Director Sheilds-Benford will <br />follow up on our May budget planning regarding the conversion of our current curbside <br />single stream system <br />two-bin recycling program to a . Instead of residents separating <br />recycling into two heavy bins, the Department of Public Works will deliver a new 35- <br />gallon recycling cart with wheels and lid for resident’s use. The entire process will be <br />easier, the single container can hold: cardboard, steel and tin cans, aluminum cans, <br />aerosol cans, glass bottles/jars, plastics, junk mail/envelops, paperback books, <br />office/printer paper, fax paper, notebook paper, gift wrap paper, newspapers, <br />magazines, catalogs, posters, brown paper bags, chipboard and paperboard, and paper <br />carrier stock (paper beverage storage containers). While there will be some significant <br />upfront costs for the carts, because of the automation the long-term labor costs will be <br />decreased. <br /> <br />two federal funded grants <br />The Police Department applied and received involving the <br />development and implementation of programs dealing with troubled youth. The first <br />Gang Resistance and <br />grant will enable the DARE Officers to be trained and teach the <br />Education Training <br /> (GREAT Training) program. The goal is to change the attitude of <br />the youth along with helping alter aggressive behavior by educating students on <br />decision-making and the outcome of those decisions. The officers will also implement a <br />five week summer program, which will engage thirty “at risk” students. The grant has <br />been approved for $68,000, which will cover partial salaries, fringe benefits, and <br />training/travel cost. <br /> <br />juvenile mentoring <br />The second grant will cover overtime salaries for a program for <br />children who are also at risk.
