TaQuoara Hardieway, 1055 Colby
Ms. Hardieway is a Brittany Woods’ student. She stated that she would enjoy the driving
range, as it would offer a sport that was not the typical as baseball, basketball and
football.
Menachen Greenblatt, 8327 Balson Ave.
Mr. Greenblatt was concerned with the possible increase of traffic with the opening of the
driving range. He did not want to see the character of the neighborhood changed.
Allison Zaromb, 8289 Tulane
Ms. Zaromb was concerned with the possibility of the driving range decreasing their
property value. With the decrease in property value, therefore the City would receive
less property tax money.
Gary Soule, 7507 Buckingham Dr.
Mr. Soule is a resident of Clayton. He felt the project was considered for a long time,
was well researched and documented. He thought the driving range was an opportunity
for the community youth and for surrounding communities to partner with each other in
sharing resources.
COUNCIL COMMENTS
Mr. Glickert stated that he had sent a memo to Council in August concerning the
location, the economics and the traffic. He asked for a moratorium on the driving range
but had never received any response. He would like to see the driving range proposal
deferred as the Parks’ Department was working on a five year master plan now and
would like it to be incorporated in this plan. It is not that people were against the driving
range, it is just where the driving range was to be placed that they opposed. Mr. Glickert
said Council just had a special session on the driving range three days previously, with
still more questions. He asked the Council to defer the present driving range plan.
Mr. Price stated that he was elected to do the best for the City. If nothing would be done
at Ruth Park the City would need to close the park because the City can no longer fund
its yearly operational deficit. It was projected that in five years the City will have a four
million dollar deficit. Mr. Price said that the driving range would fit with his article on
strong schools makes for a strong city, as a driving range would give the school children
an opportunity to learn the game of golf. If the answer to increase the revenue of the
golf course would be to market it, but that too would bring in more traffic. Mr. Price said
he would keep check on the cost-over-run and the safety issues.
Mr. Wagner thanked everyone for being concerned and becoming involved in University
City. He felt there were risks with the driving range but felt there were more risks
financially with doing nothing.
Mr. Sharpe, Jr. stated that the Director of Parks, Ms. MacCartney had presented the
Council with much detail on the proposal and believed what she had prepared was
correct. Based on economics period, Mr. Sharpe, Jr. said he would have to support the
driving range.
Ms. Brot said the Council had studied options and asked questions that constituents had
proposed in order to be able to make a well informed decision.
