The Mayor quoted Section
70 of the City Charter~ and stated that apparently the State laws do not
autkorize the use of voting machines until such time as the City has ap-
proval by the citizens of University City. Mayor Kaufman stated that per-
haps this matter should be placed as a specific issue at the next municipal
election.

Councilman Baris moved that an appropriate ordinance be prepared in order
that this issue may be submitted to the electors at the next municipal
election. Motion seconded by Councilman Tandler. Discussion followed.
Councilman Stake called for the question. Upon vote, the motion was unani-
mously carried.

~'~EKLY FIRE DEPARTMENT ?~PORTi'
The Fire Department report for the week of January 10, 1960 to 3anuary 17,
19~0~ was received and ordered filed.

WEEICLY POLICE DEPARTME1]T P~PORT:
The Police Department report for the week of January 10, 1960, to January 16,
1960, was received and ordered filed.

PERSOIR~EL DEPARTMENT REPORT:
The Personnel Department report as of December 31, 1959 and as of January 15,
1960, was received and ordered filed.

PUBLIC HEARING (CONTINUED) - BILL NO. 5788, DEFINING AND PROHIBITING DIS-
CRIMINATORY PRACTICES IN PLACES OF PUBLIC ACCO~'~4ODATION:

Mayor Kaufman stated that a public hearing was held by the Council last
week concerning Bill No. 5788 (Defining and Prohibiting Discriminatory
Practices in Places of Public Accommodation), however, the public hearing
was continued to this evening due to the fact that many people were turned
away because of the large attendance. The Mayor said that this matter will
again be continued until such time as everyone has had an opportunity to
be heard.

}{ayor Kaufman announced that the public hearing is now open.
