Mr. <br />Sorensen also filed with the City Clerk a list of the names of the business <br />men whom he stated he represents. <br /> <br />He informed the Council that he has been asked by his constituents to request <br />the Council to consider referendum action on Bill I~o. 5788 in order to give <br />the citizens of University City an opportunity to voice their opinions, pro- <br />vided that the Bill is adopted as an Ordinance. <br /> <br />Mr. Sorensen asked Councilman Baris whether he presently represents or has <br />at any time represented the Urban League, and Councilman Baris replied <br />negatively, adding that neither does he represents nor has he at any time, <br />represented the NAACP. <br /> <br />The next speaker to be recognized was Mr. Clyde Pace, 6534 Julian, operator <br />of a barber shop at 1002 Sutter Avenue. Mr. Pace read a prepared statement <br />in opposition to Bill No. 5788 and filed the statement with the City Clerk. <br /> <br />Mrs. l~1arvin Levy, 7135 Hazelwood Lane, asked to be recognized, which request <br />was granted. She stated she is appearing in behalf of herself, her husband <br />and three sons. Mrs. Levy supported Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />i,~r. Jerry Perlstein, 8700 ~ Ki~gsbury, was the next speaker. He stated that <br />he is a representative of the Imternational Ladies~ Garment Workers~ Union. <br />Mr. Perlstein urged the Council to adopt Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />~ir, Louis E. Kiernan, 19 Princeton Place, asked to be recognized, which re- <br />quest was granted. Mr. Kiernan stated he is opposed to Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mrs. M. Himeles, 7323 Midland View, upon being recognized, spoke in behalf of <br />Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr. Burr Sorkin, 6651 Clemens, asked to be recognized, which request was <br />granted. Mr, Sorkin expressed the view that an issue as highly controversial <br />and important as this should be decided upon by the people rather than by the <br />Council, <br /> <br />Mr. Victor Tucci, 6710 Crest Avenue, was the next speaker. He stated that he <br />is speaking for himself and the Council of Catholic Men of the Archdiocese <br />of St. Louis, of which there are four affiliated branches in the City of <br />University City. Mro Tucci urged the Council to assume necessary leadership <br />and adopt Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mrs. Carl V. Moore, 6944 Pershing, was next to be heard by the Council. She <br />spoke in support of Bill ~o. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr. Bud Goodman, 1077 Jackson, asked to be recognized, which request was <br />granted. Mr. Goodman spoke in behalf of Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr. l~illiam Sleator, 6914 Washington, a student at Hanley Junior High School~ <br />upon being recognized, read a petition bearing some 400 signatures of fellow <br />students, urging the Council to adopt Bill No. ~7oo. The petition was filed <br />with the City Clerk. <br /> <br /> <br />
