Session 587, Minutes <br />January 18, 1960 <br /> <br />Page 6 <br /> <br />Mr. William Flori, residing in St. Louis, upon being recognized, stated <br />that he represents the St. Louis Tavern Operators. He spoke against inte- <br />gration of eating and drinking establishments and pointed out numerous <br />problems in connection therewith. <br /> <br />Dr. Joseph Fields, Chiropodist, 8704 W. Kingsbury (office at 6635 Delmar) <br />upon being recognized, spoke in opposition to Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr. Charles Edson, 7156 Tulane, asked to be recognized, which request was <br />granted. Mr, Edson supported Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr, Joseph D. Murphy, 7901 Stanford, upon being recognized, stated that he <br />is speaking on behalf of his family and urged the Council to adopt Bill No. <br />5788. <br /> <br />At this juncture, 9:40 o'clock P.M. Mayor Kaufman announced a recess and at <br />9:50 o'clock P.M. the meeting reconvened. <br /> <br />Mr. H. Bulger, 6956 Pershing, asked to be recognized, which request was <br />granted. Mr. Bulger spoke in opposition to Bill Mo. 5788. <br /> <br />}Ir. T. Rieber, 7030 Lindell, upon being recognized, opposed Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Miss Lisa Rosen, 766 Yale, upon being recognized, stated that she is appear- <br />ing this evening on her own behalf with the consent of her parents.. She <br />stated that she attends both public and parochial schools in University City~ <br />both of which teach liberty and equality of all mankind. She urged adoption <br />of Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mr. E. E. Burke, upon being recognized, stated that he represents the Clean <br />Government League, Box 25, R.R. 13, Kirkwood 22, Missouri. He stated that <br />the Bill is unconstitutional and in violation of the laws of the State of <br />Missouri. <br /> <br />Mrs. Evelyn Perlstein, 8700 W. Kingsbury, asked to be recognized, which re- <br />quest was granted. Mrs. Perlstein said she represents herself and her family <br />and also the National Association for Social Workers. She stated that she is <br />employed at Washington University where in the School of Social Work there <br />are negro and white students, as well as persons of other races. She spoke <br />in support of Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Mrs. John J. Dorsey, 6530 Etzel Avenue, upon being recognized, asked why the <br />Bill was initially presented and Councilman Baris explained. Councilman Baris <br />stated that he introduced the Bill last November at the request of a number <br />of citizens cf University City and because he believes that the Bill is a <br />proper legislative enactment for the City of University City. <br /> <br />At this juncture, Councilman Stake stated he would like it to be a matter of <br />record that he was also asked by the same group, referred to by Councilman <br />Baris, to introduce the Bill, but he refused to do so. <br /> <br />Mrs. Carolyn Werner, 520 Kingsland, upon being recognized, stated that she is <br />speaking as a member of tI~e teaching profession.
