Regular meeting
March 20, 2006

created a community the old fashioned-way. It is important to preserve the diversity and
assets of the neighborhood which makes residency in that area so attractive.

Daniel P. Haeusser, 718 Limit Ave.
He and his wife became very involved in the garden and its activities. The garden
provided a place to meet your neighbors. The garden has won awards and grant
money for further development. There has been a large number of people involved in
the history of the garden.

Sam Ley, 6265 Cates
He was at a point of wanting to leave University City because of his experiences.
However, through working in this garden, he has met neighbors and felt like it was a
place to belong. The green-space provided beauty and also a sense of calmness as it
is not unusual to find a person playing a guitar while gazing at the green-space.

Madalene Fetsch, 6265 Cates
Thanked Ms. Brungardt for coming to our meeting. The garden supplied her with the
opportunity to meet her neighbors. Now, no matter where she went, she would run into
her neighbors and stopped and talked with them. It is an excellent way to stop crime,
and the gardeners keep the area very clean, free of trash. The garden supplies color,
foods, and community development.

Christine Michel, 736 Eastgate
th
Ms. Michel said that the garden is entering its 8 year. She said it has a diverse range
of ages from 5 to 75 years of age. Ms. Michel said that 13 years ago a resident could
hear gunfire and she actually had a person die in front of her home. This area used to
have drug dealers, but through people meeting at the garden, this doesn’t exist
anymore because of everyone looking out for each other.

Alexandre Rysnik, 701 Westgate
Mr. Rysnik said how thankful he was for the garden as this is the main factor from
keeping him away from depression.

Ms. Brungardt said she was pleased that they spoke. She said that America in Bloom
at the Botanical Gardens and also University City’s own U City In Bloom, encourages
communities to adopt areas such as that was created at Clemen’s Garden showing how
unity develops between human beings and the soil. Ms. Brungardt motioned that
University City, in its attempt to solve the error of the selling of a vest-pocket park
without the vote of the people, should not eliminate Clemens Garden or any other vest-
pocket parks, without the vote of the people. This motion was seconded by Mr.
Wagner.

Mr. Wagner asked Mr. Ollendorff about ownership of this land. Mr. Ollendorff said that
two lots were owned by Washington University, which made up about 40 % of the area
Page 6
