Only bid five sizes of major use. Garden/tractor tires – Mr. Winkler purchases these himself
anyway
Look for discount off published state price equivalent of Bridgestone, Firestone, Goodyear
Tire company taking bid should be picking up discard tires on a regular basis
Should be bidding tires with nitrogen. The Department of Transportation likes them – better
fuel economy and runs cooler.
Don’t refurbish wheels. They can only use powder coated paints now and it does not last.
Look is not important
Check County and City lists. Police cars do not need V rated tires as for the most part they are
restricted to not exceed the speed of 85 mph. H rated tires are rated up to 118 mph
Ask for a high UTQ rating (600 & above) and an A temperature rating.
One of the tires on the bid sheet was discontinued over a ear ago
Bid rock rib tire, cut resident compound, 16 PR Also bid rock lug, cut resident compound, 16
PR
Tire tread depth should be 32/32
11 R 24.5 tires should have rock rib no highway
315 80 22.5 tires should be cut resistant, rock lug and 20 ply. All truck tires should not be
speed restricted unless used off-road
Bid item #5 did not have a load comparison, it should be 10 ply
Retreads tread depth should not be any lower than 26 compared to 32 for new tire. Waster
hauler retreads should be rock lug 8.5 to 9 width. Retreaders will generally do 8, to cut their
cost.
Casing is good five years from the date of manufacturing, therefore if a correct retread were
done, each should last a minimum of one year and there is no need to request a tire that can
be retreaded eight or nine times
Casing should be 16 to 20 ply, core with no repair
Retreads should be same ply (16 ply) as new tire and same cut resistant compound.
Firestone is the number one dealer in the world selling truck tires. Mr. Hyman noted that there is
probably no more than a five percent variance from one brand to another.
