Sculpture Series: <br />Commission Member Bernstein provided an update on the sculpture <br />series with the Washington University students. There was a brief discussion involving a <br />site visit to WU. <br /> <br />Treasurers Report <br />: Commission Member Mandel provided a financial report dated <br />January 9. Chair Smorodin requested clarification regarding any donations that should be <br />recorded in the financial statements. There was a motion made to proceed with the <br />purchase of two gift certificates to the Melting Pot, totaling $100 to provide an <br />expression of gratitude on behalf of the current Commission members to the two <br />departing members (Barber and Zach). The motion was approved unanimously. <br /> <br />Council Member Report: <br />Council Member Brot provided an update on the Big Read. <br />She announced the new Finance Director was Janet Watson and invited everyone to <br />attend a welcome reception January 31 and encouraged attendance at the Ice Carnival in <br />the Loop. She stated that Council is working on developing the ED Tax Development <br />Board, which will make recommendations regarding the sales previously mentioned sales <br />tax. <br /> <br />City Manager Julie Feier <br />introduced herself and thanked the Commission for the work <br />they do and the opportunity to attend the meeting. Ms Feier stated that she wanted to be <br />at this meeting in particular in case there were any issues with Ms. Thompson’s <br />transition. <br /> <br />Mr. Tom McCarthy <br />introduced himself as the new Arts and Letters Commission <br />Liaison. He expressed his excitement to be working wit the Commission. <br /> <br />Returning Artist: <br />Commission Member Mandel provided background on the returning <br /> <br />artist series and an update on its progress.The official dates for Returning Artist are <br />strd <br />March 21-23, 2007. David Harris will be joining the University City School District to <br />teach, perform, and lecture students. He is a composer and arranger. He also plays the <br />trombone. David studied with Roger Davenport of the St. Louis Symphony. On March <br />th <br />22, 2007 there will be a reception from 7-9p in the City Hall Chambers on the 5 floor. <br />Ms. Smorodin shared a sign up sheet for the upcoming event, and Lisa agreed to email a <br />digital form for follow up. Mr. McCarthy stated that he had confirmed the reception <br />space and that Ms. McFee would coordinate the press release. The reception is on the <br />same night as the school board meeting which might be a problem for some people <br />wanting to attend both events. Traci Moore-Clay will be designing and printing the post <br />cards and posters. <br />Ms. Smorodin reported that the Darwin Portman Fund still had $2107.00 remaining so <br />that no additional public outreach would be necessary for the event. <br /> <br />Ms. Mendel and Ms. Feier briefly discussed financial reporting. Mr. McCarthy was not <br />aware of any donations, but felt they should be accounted for separately in the financial <br />report. The Commission agreed. Ms. Smorodin provided additional background on Mr. <br />Darwin Portman, that he had been a local attorney and advocate of the arts for many <br /> <br />
