Creda asked as to what would happen at the end of the filmmaking experience.
She felt it very important that we protect ourselves. It was also pointed out that
we would need information and filming requirements for the school system as
well, such as the need for signed releases from students and/or their parents.
Lisa M. suggested involving the students as interns with the filmmaking process.
Mr. Thomas is available in early February and his schedule is flexible. Calla
mentioned that his work was being displayed in a local gallery and that she would

e-mail the name of that gallery to the members of the commission.

Photo Show
The Photo Show is basically at the point when it is out of Barbara’s hands as the
calendar is created. Barbara would like to send thank you notes to donors and
plans on doing so. Monika McFee e-mailed a couple of weeks ago, following our
selection of photographs for the calendar. She pointed out that one of the photos
that we chose for Spring or Summer is actually a Fall photograph. It seems that
the city receives complaints when photos in the calendar appear to be out of
season. Monika asked if we could move around the photos. Barbara, in the
interest of time, made an executive decision and told Monika to go ahead a
change the photographs so that they matched up with their respective seasons.
They have been properly scrambled. Barbara has suggested that next year, we
ask Monika to tell people who call up to complain that “It’s Art”, and that’s how
the Arts and Letters Commission feels.
Stefany pointed out that she received a complaint that on the December month of
the current calendar, the January 2008 month is wrong.
It was also noted that the City Council strongly feels that the calendar should only
have University City images. Stefany asked Tom to speak with the City Manager
th
on this issue. It is the 39 year of the competition and it has always, to the
commission’s knowledge, been a metro-wide competition. Daniel felt, that to his
recollection, that the competition was originally U. City based. Calla noted that
this issue has come up in the past when it is suggested that the photo show stick
to a specific theme. Unfortunately, we are limited in that we cannot do any better
than what is submitted. Stefany mentioned that there were also negative
comments made about the month of June in the current calendar that depicts a
topless female from behind. Marilyn pointed out that with art, there will always be
comments made.
Barbara spoke with our judge, Susan Stang, and she had lots of comments
surrounding the opening at the library. Barbara would like to share these
comments at a meeting of commission members who would like to be involved in
the Photo Show. Perhaps at a meeting to take place early this summer.
Tom suggest putting the Photo Show dates and a website address on the U. City
calendar.
It was noted that within our By-laws, we are charged with promoting the arts in
the community. We see this as the greater Metro area.
Calla looks at our yearly schedule of events and notes that the Sculpture Show
needs to remain the same due to Washington University’s schedule, February is
the best time for Returning Artists based on the U. City school’s calendar, the
