summer Concert Series must remain in the summer-time. The Photo Show can
be moved to a different time, possibly the Fall. Barbara noted that in the
comments she received, no one had a problem with changing the dates. The
only main concern of entrants was their opportunity to have their photos make
the calendar. Calla noted that these issues could be discussed at the Photo
Show meeting. It would be a good idea to invite Monika McFee to that meeting.
It would be possible to host a Fall Show of 2008 from which photos would be
th
selected for the calendar of 2010. For 2009, we could print a special 40
anniversary calendar that highlights the best entries over time.
The commission asked for clarification as to the allowance of employees for
University City to enter the Photo Show. It was noted that neither commission
members nor staff members were allowed to enter. It was questioned as to
whether Council Members could enter, as was the case this year. Barbara noted
that these photos are judged blindly and she doesn’t have a problem with their
entries. The commission agreed to think about the guidelines as to not create
the allusion of impropriety if a Council Member or other person of government
enters and wins. Lisa suggested making a blanket statement saying that Arts
and Letters Commission members as well as anyone paid by University City
were banned from participating. Then the commission asked if family members
of these individuals should also be banned. The commission will give the issue
some thought.

Starlight Concert Series
Tom announced that the concert schedule was set and we have quite a few new
people performing and also that we are staying within budget this year. Tom
provided a handout to the commission listing the dates of the concert series and
the performers.
Creda also provided a handout to the commission as she discussed her desire to
create a sub-committee to meet this summer to discuss the future of the Starlight
Concert Series. She would like that sub-committee to meet sometime between
June and August. Creda is afraid that we are leaving something on the table and
are missing out on possible partnerships in the community. Also, we are missing
out on talent due to time commitments.
Creda discussed the concepts laid out in her handout and the deliverables she
would like the sub-committee to attain. She would like to look at become a
multifaceted event focused around particular themes that would incorporate
music, food, art and dance.
Lisa G. points out that it would actually be a committee rather that sub-
committee.
Creda notes that as far as the budget goes, we are definitely leaving something
on the table. Tom pointed out that the RAC gives the Loop $4000 for their
concerts on Tuesdays. There’s definitely money out there and available to the
concert series.
Lisa M. noted that we need to connect with local artists who have become
successful, not for performances per say, but for sponsorship.
