Mr. Edwards – Traffic flow is an issue. The new building where Dick Blick is located is helpful.
This property had been vacant. This takes up space that was previously a gathering space for
kids. Mr. Edwards also stated the issue at hand is not a new problem – what can we do for kids
in this age range. He gave the example of a club that had been opened in North County
specifically for kids in this age range. It was built for a capacity of 700. When it opened, there
would be up to 2000 kids showing up and shook up the neighborhood.
Questions/Comments and discussion:
-The migration of kids is also part of the issue. They are coming from all over. The malls
have kicked them out. They have moved on to The Loop.
-If the large capacity club could work, why not have more places like that?
-There is potential for fights at those places.
-There is an African American cultural center. There could be opportunities for youth
programs there.
-The African American cultural center will be more geared toward exhibits highlighting
specific topics. It will be more of an educational resource. Perhaps it could be more
youth-oriented during the day or host more youth-oriented events
-U City youth society is a new group concerned with gang violence. There was a dance
th
on January 4. About 100 kids showed up.
-Perhaps U City could host outdoor movies. Maybe at Heman Park. This could be a
unique attraction for youth.
-Events should be held all over the community to spread kids out. Maybe it would get
kids interested in different things.
-The pool should be open once a week for kids only in the evening.
-What about Monday night concerts? Would that work for kids in the summer?
-The music is more for adults.
-COCA is a good venue to host events for kids.
Abbie Carter – This seems like a problem that is bigger than just University City. If we only had
to deal with University City teenagers, would we be able to do more to address the discipline of
the youth? We will have to try to work with other communities. We need to find out where all
the kids are coming from and collaborate with those communities and areas.
tm;
šE
