<br />Tom Sullivan, 751 Syracuse <br />Mr. Sullivan said the problem with the new firehouse is its location. He said by building <br />it on the far end of the City; it will double the response time for many areas south of <br />Delmar. Mr. Sullivan said a large portion of the first ward would be closer to the Clayton <br />fire station. He said the condo unit across the street from the proposed location has had <br />trouble selling units and now they won’t be able to sell any. Mr. Sullivan said the <br />firehouse was politically motivated. <br /> <br />Ernestine Bolton, 7535 Ahren Ave <br />Ms. Bolton was in favor of the firehouse. She said the firemen deserve the best. Ms. <br />Bolton said she lived down the street from the firehouse and did not hear the engine <br />noises. <br /> <br />Lawrence Taylor, 7472 Stanford <br />Mr. Taylor talked about efficiency and effectiveness. He said U City will have a new <br />firehouse and we have the best people, but the City needs to do this in a way that is <br />sustainable over the next hundred years. Mr. Taylor said there is a cost by fragmenting <br />the firemen by putting them in a different location. He said it could cost the City an extra <br />ten percent a year. <br /> <br />COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Mr. Crow said he disagreed with a comment made by a member of the public saying <br />that it would be absurd for anyone to walk away from grant money saying it was a <br />narrow-minded statement to make. He said there are times when you need to walk <br />away from grant money and times that you don’t and each case should be looked at to <br />make sure it is appropriate and necessary. Mr. Crow said his concern is the $874,000 <br />project cost but will have a number of cost overruns. He urged the City Manager and <br />staff to be diligent in using every cost reduction that can be used and to keep this <br />Council apprised of the progress and cost of the project. <br /> <br />Mr. Price said 13 years ago when he and Mr. Wagner took a tour of the firehouse, they <br />knew something had to change, as conditions were not acceptable anymore. He noted <br />the police department is located in an outdated building area. <br /> <br />Mr. Glickert said all comments have been thought provoking. He said wanting a fire <br />station is the common ground. Mr. Glickert said he was concerned with the safety and <br />timing for the first responders, not just because of the grant money and the land that <br />was provided. He said many in ward one will have Clayton as their first responder. Mr. <br />Glickert said he was in favor of the fire station but not at this location. <br /> <br />Mr. Kraft said the discussion have been on a high level, focusing on facts. He said, as <br />Mr. Price had alluded to, there will be many more decisions that will need to be made <br />and complimented everyone in the civility of all discussions. <br /> <br />Mayor Welsch called for a vote where Resolution 2011 – 14 carried by a majority with <br />one Nay vote from Mr. Glickert. <br /> <br />D.
