commercial.

Mr. Wesenberg stated that perhaps this area could include seating areas and trees.

Mr. Hubbman stated that they would be providing electricity and water to the center of
the roundabout which would allow for some flexibility in design.

Mr. Lai stated that the roundabout was a good idea for addressing traffic. He added that
it provided a focal point and anything that could be added, other than lawn, would be
great.

Mr. Myers mentioned the example of the history museum and the roundabout provided
another opportunity to enhance the space.

Mr. Lai asked if it would be the trolley company or the City who would have any say
about what goes into the roundabout. He asked who would make that decision.

Mr. Hubbman stated that the City would own it.

The HPC members discussed opportunities for the area as a focal point.

Ms. Schmidt stated that it sounded like it was in the project budget to create the
roundabout and curb and that was it.

Mr. Hubbman concurred.

Mr. Myers stated that perhaps another contractor could design that area.

Mr. Lai asked if the only way to cross Delmar was east of the roundabout near Mike
King Drive.

Mr. Nittler state that was correct and the reason was that trolley track would be in place
and there would be no other way to get pedestrians to the sidewalk.

Mr. Lai asked if the three proposed crosswalks near the west side of the roundabout
would have signage.

Mr. Nittler stated they would.

Sinan Alpaslan, City Engineer, stated that right-of-way permits would be required in the
future and they would not be approved without HPC review and approval. He asked
about the curbs and if the HPC members would be okay with granite curbs being
replaced with reinforced concrete. He added that it was difficult to install granite curbs.
He also asked if the members were okay with the removal of the two existing pedestrian
islands. He mentioned that old trolley tracks could still be in existence below the street
and asked if they were discovered during excavation if they should be salvaged. Mr.
Alpaslan asked how important the granite curb issue would be and if it were a potential
deal-breaker.

510
Page of
