Traffic Commission
6801 Delmar Boulevard, University City, Missouri 63130, Phone: (314) 862-6767, Fax: (314) 863-9146
Jackson, trying to turn right on Drexel Dr. This is NOT a Historic District.
Possible Solutions were explained as follows:
A. Keep the small traffic circle and eliminate parking adjacent to the traffic circle. With this option,
signage will be installed to direct traffic to the right of the circle.
B. Remove the small traffic circle and open up the intersection with parking allowed. With this
option, the removal of the streetlight will be necessary, and the intersection may become a
yield/stop controlled intersection depending on the traffic conditions. Further evaluation will be
necessary in order to know what type of control is required.
C. Install an intersection lane control “Fish-hook arrows” sign on Drexel at Jackson to clarify traffic
flow at the intersection. With this option, the problem will not be completely solved, but at least
will clarify the confusion at the intersection.

Existing conditions were presented for the intersection of Purdue Ave and Drexel Drive as follows: This
intersection is closed on the north end and has a circular center island that obstructs turning traffic.
The best possible way to mark these obstructions and direct the flow of traffic is to install three (3)
OM4-1 markers (defined in MUTCD as diamond shape 18”x18,” with a red background, with red retro-
reflectors), facing north on Purdue on the island that closes Purdue, and three (3) facing south on
Purdue on the same island. A W1-6 Large Arrow left, shall be placed with the center object marker of
the three (3) facing south, to identify northbound traffic that they may only turn left.
Officer Margul stated that there are no reported accidents at either intersection.
Commissioner Brot inquired information about the third option and the real need for the installation of a
sign. Ms. Gutierrez explained that since a safety issue has been reported to the City, it is the due
diligence of the City to take action.
Commissioner Womack stated that in his opinion there is confusion about the traffic flow. Mr. Womack
noted how most of the drivers ignore the “keep the right” signs on the intersection of Jackson and
Chamberlain Avenue traffic circle.

Citizens Comments:
MaryAnn Coley, 7365 Drexel Drive
Ms. Coley stated her husband, Mr. Coley, maintains that traffic circle. Ms. Coley stated this circle
provides traffic calming, street lighting, and aesthetics to the neighborhood. Ms. Coley explained that
she has a list with emails from this subdivision, which she uses for outreach to the community
regarding this type of issues. Her recommendation is to do nothing at the circle.

Commissioner Womack agreed with the preservation of the circles explained by Ms. Coley.

Derreck Coley, 7365 Drexel Drive
Mr. Coley stated that traffic circles are a good asset to the neighborhood, including the one at
Chamberlain Ave and Jackson Ave. Parking has become a premium and parking is high in demand.
Mr. Coley agreed that large trucks are not able to make the turn and he has witnessed them driving on
Traffic Commission Minutes – June 12, 2013 Page 4
