Meeting Minutes –University CityGreen Practices Committee <br />May 9, 2013-Page 2 <br />6.Old Business <br />a.University City Waste Management Survey Lois Sechrist <br />(1) She plans to discuss the information gathered during the next meeting. <br />b.Land Use/Open Space/Parks Subcommittee Report by Jerry Breakstone <br />(1)Deferred to the next meeting. <br />c.Green Buildings Subcommittee Report by Jeff Mishkin <br />(1)Jeff is planning to meet with Jared Agee, the City Building Comm <br />Building and Construction codes. <br />(2)Jeff asked for suggestions on how to develop the database of University City codes and if the existing <br />buildings must meet the new 2012 codes. <br />(3)Lois shared information on the areas of the Strategic Sustainabifor him to consider including <br />Municipal, Residential and Commercial. <br />(4)Tim mentioned that most updated codes do not require existing buildings to meet new rules. The new <br />codes usually only apply to major renovations and new development projects. <br />d.Green Buildings- Subcommittee Report by Tim Michels <br />(1) Tim is frustrated with the delays on Council reviewing the <br />Glickert will talk to the City Manager about the item. <br />e.Bring Conservation Home Endorsement Decision <br />(1)Dianne supports the program since it has been around long enough to be proven effective and positive <br />to communities, other local communities have endorsed the program, U City in Blo <br />with the group and it meets one of the strategic goals of the Sustainability plan. <br />(2)Dianne mentioned that the program does not require funding since BCH will reduce the fe <br />(down to $25) for participating property owners with the endorse <br />(3)The Commission unanimously voted to recommend that the City endohis program. <br />(4)Dianne Benjamin and Lynnette will work on creating a draft resol that will need to reviewed by <br />City departments and finalized before submitting to Council for <br />(5)Dianne researched and located online links to information on natpollinators to share with the <br />group. Sources include the St. Louis Zoo www.stlzoo.org and the National Wildlife Federation <br />www.nwf.org <br />(6)Dianne mentioned that the NWF has a community wildlife habitat certification which is very similar to <br />the local BCH program. The NWF will now certify an entire commun <br />neighborhood or as big as a county. The City of Chesterfield has Dianne will find <br />out more information on the national program for her next project. <br />f.Goals Update Work Session - continued <br />(1) Our last discussion on goals was in April and the remaining items, <br />developing committees and public outreach. <br />(2) Items under Green Buildings include the residential and commercithe <br />idea of adopting a green building rating system, such as LEED, Green Globes or a self-rated program. <br />(3) Tim is not sure if there is a standard rating system that meets the municipalitys needs and feels that <br />the City should focus on rating overall carbon levels, recycling, etc. and learn more about how to <br />become a net zero community. Lois has information on a scorecard created by the City of Austi <br />http://austintexas.gov that is similar to the local Green Business Challenge. <br /> <br />
