Session 1806
March 19, 2001

Responding to Mr. Ollendorff, Mr. Grimaldi said that the pickup is slightly wider and will
not fit in the garage.

Mr. Wagner said that this issue has been around a very long time and Mr. Grimaldi's
complaints are quite reasonable. The Council has tried to deal with this several times in
the past. Some marginal changes were made, but the major problem is that the State
law will not discriminate between types of trucks on the license plates. If they would
issue personal vehicle license plates to certain small trucks, our problems would be
over. Mr. Wagner believes it is time for another Council subcomittee on this issue to
restudy this problem.

Mr. Sharpe said that he has people come to him about this issue, as well. He asked
Mr. Ollendorff if there were stickers that people could purchase to put on their trucks.
Mr. Ollendorff stated that the City Council approved issuing stickers to residents to put
on their trucks in hardship cases. The City will sell a permit each year to the resident in
a hardship case.

Ms. Colquitt agrees that this should definitely be restudied. She also has had citizens
call about their trucks and this ordinance.

Mr. Schoomer asked that those members of Council, interested in changing the law
constitute themselves as a subcommittee. Mr. Wagner and Ms. Colquitt volunteered.

Mayor Adams stated that the last time they attempted to change this law an
overwhelming majority of citizens showed up at the meeting in opposition to Council
changing the law. There is a definite concerted group of citizens that do not want to
see any change to the truck ordinance.

Mr. Lieberman said that this has been on the books at least fifty years that he is aware
of and it is there, because the citizens of this community do not want trucks parked on
their residential streets. They felt that they were unsightly, and commercial markings
were often on them. They want their residential neighborhoods to stay looking nice.
The police determines if it is truck by the license plate.

CITY CLERK'S DOCKET:

BILLS FOR SECOND AND THIRD READING:

BILL NO. 8511 - AMENDING CHAPTER 34 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF
UNIVERSITY CITY, RELATING TO ZONING DISTRICTS ESTABLISHED
PURSUANT TO SECTION 34-22 AND ENACTING A NEW ZONING MAP, SO
AS TO CHANGE THE CLASSIFICATION OF PROPERTY AT 7023 FORSYTH

12
